Can't ban bad-smelling people from library Houston Chronicle Friday, 30 December 2005 17:01:47 EST
A new Dallas Public Library code of conduct that bans distracting odors has drawn criticism from homeless advocates who say the rule unfairly targets the homeless and poor.
Dallas homeless advocate James Waghorne said the city does not provide facilities for some of the library's neediest patrons to keep shower-fresh.
"If people can't take care of basic hygiene and are disturbing to the 100 or so people around them, then it's perfectly acceptable for the library to say, 'Will you please sit somewhere else?' or 'Will you consider coming back another day?' " said Leslie Burger, president-elect of the American Library Association.
[ We either accomodate the normal usage of a library, or bend over backward for the exceptions and dysfunctional. Since most homeless people stay that way regardless of the resources made available to them, it seems this guy Waghorne is a pathological liar who believes that somehow these people have gotten an unfair shake in life and cannot get up. He does not mention that most are alcoholic, mentally disturbed, or criminals, and that the reason they're homeless is that they're dysfunctional in the first place. Leave the library for people who can use it normally. The library won't help the homeless because nothing will. ]
